HOMEGROWN
& HEALTHY HAIR
- A veteran of the beauty industry for over 20 years, and a
former spa owner in Atlanta, GA for almost eight, Maria Heckscher
has had the majority of her training and experience in the "hair"
department. Her love of all things natural inspired her to come
up with these do-it-yourself tress treats.

The
Protein Cure (for all hair types)
3
Tbsp sesame oil
3 Tbsp castor oil
1/4 cup olive oil
1 Tbsp Dr. Bronner's liquid castile soap
4 Tbsp glycerin
1 1/4 cups water
2 Tbsp egg yolk
1 tsp cider vinegar
10 drops rosemary essential oil, optional
Directions
In a double-boiler, combine first 3 ingredients. Bring
to a boil and turn off heat for 5 minutes. Let sit. With
an electric mixer, slowly stir in next 3 ingredients on
low speed, until thick. Then, on high, beat in yolk, vinegar,
and essential oil if used. Refrigerate overnight. The
next day, add 2 whole eggs to it, in a blender, on high
speed. Use as a conditioner, and let sit for 2 minutes.
As a deep treatment, put hair in shower cap, with hot
towel wrapped over it, for 20 minutes.
Style-Setters
Maria says that when Marilyn Monroe used to get her hair
set with curlers, her stylist would spritz lemon juice
on it. No, it had nothing to do with keeping the color
of her platinum hair snowy light it was to hold
the shape of the curl. Try it yourself.
Those silicone-based hair glossing serums you know
the kind, called something like Gloss Up, Shine On (you
get the idea) not only end up leaving lots of tough
residue on your hair, but they're pretty pricey, too!
Try sesame oil instead, advises Maria. Pour just a few
drops into your palms, and run hands through hair. It'll
add the shine you want, and also keep hair strands separated.
