BERRY,
BERRY BALANCING
- Although utilizing the delicious scent of berries is nothing
unusual when it comes to body-pampering, using the actual properties
of berries to benefit the skin is. The Allegria Spa in Beaver
Creek, CO, has a treatment called Wild Mountain Berry Scrub,
which combines not one, but two types of whole berries
strawberries and raspberries in an exfoliating experience
that's especially helpful in maintaining good skin texture and
tone.

"The
acidity of the berries balances the pH levels of the skin,"
says Spa Director Maggie Dunphy. In addition to the fruit, sea
salt and French grapeseed oil are blended together to create
a body scrub mixture that temporarily turns you into mixed berry
tart. |

But
oh, the results! After that dead layer of dermis is gently
sloughed off, softer, smoother, more glowing skin is instantly
revealed. And thanks to the berries, it's in prime pH
condition. (Oh, and you won't be looking like dessert
for too long: A creamy Wildflower Honey Rinse is used
to cleanse the body afterwards, followed by a water rinse,
and then a massage.) When using exfoliation treatments
at home, Maggie notes that it's best to use circular motions
("kind of like waxing a car"). If you're using
two hands, have your left hand make small counter-clockwise
circles, while your right hand works clockwise.
Since your goal is to only remove the very top layer of
skin, be sure to be gentle: "You don't want to massage
a scrub into the skin," Maggie emphasizes. And because
the skin on your upper chest and neck is as sensitive
as the skin on your eyelids, keep these areas "scrub-free."
Focus on the bottoms of your feet, elbows, and wherever
else may require extra-special attention. (To order products
