Nutrition Home :: Convert With Compassion
  By Evelyn Gilbert [email]

At a recent vegetarian event in New York City, with much trepidation, I told someone that I eat fish. To my utter amazement, another person in the room who overheard the conversation shouted "Eeewww!," and then got up and actually left. Okay, I eat fish. But even if you hate me, don't berate me! At one time I ate red meat and poultry too, but the love and kindness of a few enlightened people helped me change my ways.

One of the biggest ironies — and atrocities — within the vegetarian community is that hardcore veggies or vegans are often nicer to animals than they are to other humans. Being kind to animals is a beautiful thing, but guess what, people are animals as well, and we need love and compassion too!

The next time you meet someone who doesn't share your diet, open your heart first, and then explain your point of view. Once love is flowing freely, the other person is more likely to open their mind to your message. Taking a gentle, considerate approach is not only the right thing to do, but also the most efficient way to affect social change. How did the person I recently encountered expect to accomplish anything — for himself, the animals, or anyone else, when all that resulted was embarrassment and hurt.

Instead of seizing a great opportunity to discuss why he felt eating fish is disgusting, he let that chance slip by. Instead of informing about some of the health hazards associated with consuming fish and the dramatic environmental impact of doing so, he chose to simply be negative. Semi-vegetarians deserve respect, as do all animals. Next time you come across one, shower him or her with understanding and information, rather than criticism and judgement. The power of love is mighty. It can create change — and more vegetarians.
