Two-time
US Olympian Debbi Lawrence loves rabbits. She and her husband
live with ten of them in their Wisconsin home! Affection for
animals prompted this racewalking champion to become a vegetarian
about a decade ago. Despite resistance from sports nutritionists,
who always attributed any less than perfect performance to her
lack of meat eating, Debbi is committed to living a "compassionate"
lifestyle. |

She
says the key to keeping her energy level up during rigorous
training and racing is a 40/30/30 diet. "When I gave
up red meat, I became anemic. I had to learn how to replace
it and how to combine foods. Now I eat 40 percent carbs,
30 percent fat, and 30 percent protein, and I feel the
best I've ever felt in my life." Debbi, who is 38
and competes against women almost half her age, says her
diet helps her recover after events faster than her younger
opponents.
Winning races "is not just about chronological age,"
she concedes. "It's about the way you feel."
To ensure she sticks to her diet all the time, Debbi often
travels with a suitcase full of food containing items
like tofu, tempeh, protein drinks, and juices. "I
drink a combination of dehydrated beet juice, dehydrated
carrot juice, and dried barley grass," she notes.
"The barley helps keep my system alkaline. It buffers
the acidity created by lactic acid when I exercise."
Debbi will continue to compete and one day may become
the first vegetarian racewalking champ in history. Best
of luck, Debbi!
