WHY
WITH WEIGHTS - "It's important to have a
diversified fitness program that will not only work your body
differently, but also keeps you from getting bored,"
says Theresa Hessler, a certified personal trainer in South
Florida (www.theresahessler.com).
If you're used to a cardiovascular workout or mind/body exercises,
strength training can complement your fitness regimen by adding
variety to your body's movements and targeted exercise areas.

When
picking up weights, you're working a specific muscle group,
one at a time. Although an aerobic workout increases your
heart rate and stamina, it doesn't build muscle as strongly
or quickly as does strength training. Similarly, yoga
creates flexibility and strength using your body's own
resistance, but doesn't work specific muscles groups such
as biceps and triceps. By diversifying your workouts,
it actually enhances the benefits of each type of exercise.
